Serving a Critical Yet Underserved Industry

In 2022 alone, the USDA reported approximately 254 million acres of principal crops harvested. Of that, it is estimated 30% or more of the acres are serviced by custom planters, crop care and harvesters, who provide essential contracted services for farmers.

While farmers benefit from federally-backed crop insurance policies to mitigate risks tied to their operations, contracted service and input providers remain significantly underserved in terms of insurance coverage. Farmers effectively utilize the Federal Crop Insurance Program, but contract service and input providers do not qualify.  The absence of insurance coverage options exposes service and input providers like custom harvesters to potential loss when adverse weather conditions impact crop production.

Historically, there hasn’t been insurance coverage that protects these key agricultural service and input providers, until now. Vane has recently launched a first-of-its-kind B2B insurance solution, providing unique solutions for a variety of agribusinesses, such as custom farming operations, to protect against revenue loss when contracted farmers cancel custom planting, crop care and harvesting services due to weather events.

A Revolutionary Offering: Vane - A Specialty Ag Insurance Provider

Vane Specialty Agricultural Insurance Solutions, an innovator in the agriculture insurance space, is revolutionizing the way agribusinesses protect their balance sheet and loss of revenue when their customer doesn’t purchase their product or service due to weather related losses.

Vane is led by Don Preusser, a recognized insurance professional with over 30 years of personal, commercial, and agricultural insurance, reinsurance, and legal experience. Don’s expertise has served him as President of John Deere Insurance Company, President of Precision Risk Management (an approved U.S.  AIP insurer), and now as President of Vane Ag.

“Our distinct market approach diverges from limited existing solutions. Instead, we offer a 'Basis Risk' insurance policy, tailored to shield specific field locations from loss caused by weather perils. This contrasts with parametric insurance policies, which typically extend coverage over a generalized geographic area, focusing on one or two perils such as excessive heat or insufficient rainfall,” said Preusser. “Our approach aims to provide comprehensive protection, ensuring that each field location is safeguarded against multi-peril weather-related risks, ultimately offering more tailored and robust coverage for our clients.”

Innovating Insurance: Vane’s Approach with Agros®

Set out to automate claim review and processing procedures for its agribusiness clients, Vane required a technology partner capable of providing the necessary data analytics and software development essential for validating field locations, date of loss, and cause of loss and conducting damage analysis.  This type of automated claim analysis is a relatively new service for agricultural claim managers who have traditionally relied on ‘boots on the ground’ loss assessments.

Agrograph’s crop insurance solutions deliver the precision data insights needed for providers to standardize risk review, optimize the policy development process and elevate the customer experience through enhanced product offerings and streamlined processes. Agrograph powers Vane’s unique offering by providing a scalable data integration solution that automates claim validation services.

There hasn’t been insurance coverage that protects these key agricultural service and input providers, until now.

“What Vane is doing for the insurance industry is revolutionary. They have developed innovative solutions to insure an entire sector of the agricultural supply chain that previously operated without the safety net that crop insurance coverage provides to farmers and ranchers. Combing that service with Agrograph’s scalable technology, allows greater efficiency and accuracy for everyone,"said Jim O’Brien, CEO of Agrograph.

Agrograph continues to serve customers both in the United States and worldwide through their insurance products and scalable data solutions. In an era when climate patterns, production methods and market demands are changing at a pace never seen before, harnessing the power of data and embracing innovative solutions ensures that the resilience and adaptability synonymous with production agriculture is also present in business processes and longevity for the industries supporting it at large.
